GATE S2 - Episode 3: Surprisingly Tragic

GATE might have much to improve, as I said on the last review, but this episode caught me off-guard. Spoilers, intentional or otherwise, may be present.

No fights in this episode, but this has the potential to turn GATE into a complicated series, from the political part, to the emotional part. This episode was titled 'Tuka Luna Marceau' for a reason.

Apparently that Elven woman we met at the end of last season stirred up some trouble for Luna, by saying that her father's dead, so that she could make Itami defeat the dragon for Tuka to deal with her father's loss.

Tuka, clearly traumatized by all this, had a mental breakdown. She thought Itami was her father, who . This early into the episode, we got some philosophy. Actually, this surprises me. The characters might be more complicated than first meets the eye.

On the other side, it turns out that the slave might have another side, a revengeful one to destroy the empire. How will she turn out? This could make for a complex political story. I'm itching to know how her story will develop.

And it looks like she's targeted Pina (who didn't get screen time in this episode). This will be interesting.

Also, it seems like it'll be a trend for every fantasy world people to take advantage of the Japanese 'personality,' honesty and humanity. That will surely take a toll for Itami and his squad.

Now, Itami was forced to pretend to be Luna's father, with the fear of her losing her mind. Seriously, these scenes were tragic. Luna was happy beyond belief to spend time again with her father, but Itami also had his thoughts about this awkward situation.

At the conclusion, Itami abandoned his mission--which is suspicious--after he listened to an old man, who said for him to listen to his heart. He embarked on a journey with Rory, Lelei, and Tuka, along with the other elf whose name I haven't remembered, to slay the dragon.

As expected, this guy will travel with all the girls. Oh well. This episode is already a tad different than the last episodes and season, with the promise to give a more complicated story. We'll see next week.
