Grimgar - Episode 11: Old Friends, Old Enemy

We did get the fights we were waiting for, after all. This episode eleven, Between Life and Death, our band of heroes went deeper into the Cyrene Mine, where they finally did face the boss--with some plot twists. Spoiler alert for intentional or unintentional spoilers.

The episode started up with a flashback. A little unexpected, looking into Mary's past, how she interacted with her friends back then. Interesting, however a little bit sudden. Well, it will be to prepare for what will come next.

Not too many things happened. They descended to the next level, had some Assassin's Creed-style sneaking, but that's about it for the action.

What I really pay attention to is the scenery. The lighting. The cave just provides a really nice spot to use the watercolor-y style of Grimgar.

And now we know why the show started by presenting Mary's friends. Suddenly, her three zombified friends came to the scene, due to a curse.

Now, this was really sudden. It didn't foreshadow to this in the previous episodes.

Well, sudden or not, the following battle was amazing. Fluid, epic as usual, with a little less new moves (though there's that one bit where Haruhiro mentions that Mary has learned Dispel. Oh well.)

It was a different sort of enemy they fought; humanoid, unlike the savage monsters they had been fighting. It was new action in Grimgar, where our heroes got magical missiles being fired back at them. Also, Haruhiro took a little step into strategy, not just facing the zombies one-on-one, but looking at their strengths and weaknesses.

Finally, it got really emotional, while Mary's friends were just introduced at the beginning of the show, but her needing to free them from the curse was just sad. Nice scenes, story-wise and art-wise.

They rested for a moment, with Haruhiro giving us the meaning of this show--Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, where their friends are now ash.

Once more, suddenly, somehow, the giant kobold appeared out of nowhere, forcing them to run.

Apart from the suddenness of the boss appearing, why didn't Mary waver, not moving, upon the sight of it? Surely that fear can't be stopped just by releasing her friends.

During this other Assassin's Creed-style scene with the parkour among crumbling scaffolding, apparently we learn why Ranta's personality became a conflict in the show. Apparently, when he grabbed Haruhiro as he fell, he really did care for the group.

But then, the plot twist: he fell from the scaffolding after rescuing Haruhiro.

As per his Dark Knight personality, he must challenge all the Kobolds alone, and somehow not get killed (as Manato already did), while the others race to outflank the giant boss.

Right, that had been a pretty interesting episode of Grimgar with the action and emotion. Apart from the turn of events being too sudden, it had been quite an entertaining one, overall. Let us see, then, how they shall save Ranta next week.
