So, Bungou Stray Dogs was a comedy after all. Perhaps something nice for a change.
Well, last time we learned that Atsushi was a tiger and this group of eccentrics called the Armed Detectives recruited him... though, perhaps, he still needed some convincing. This one, episode 2: A Certain Bomb was quite a lighthearted episode (more than the last one), though still tense(-ish) with a bomber in town, as said by the title. Spoiler alert, intentional or otherwise.
Atsushi wakes up and launches into something quite poetic that he haven't slept under a roof since forever, and Dazai really woke him up nervous with a phone call, saying there was an emergency.
And we would expect what kind of emergency that was, right? A suicide gone wrong.
Who would thought that he'd complain about getting killed. Or disliking torture.
Dazai still tries to recruit Atsushi into the Detectives, apparently; perhaps it wasn't enough to force him last time. Anyway, there we go, once more we have the self-doubting hero, Atsushi, who can't even control his tiger transformations. And once more we have the helpful, supportive deuteragonist, Dazai, who suddenly wanted to help him find a job.
We do know what kind of job he'll give him, right?
Kunikida arrived, and once more opens his Ideal Book to tell them their schedule. And as usual, this turned out to be a battle of sorts between the two Detectives, while discouraging Atsushi further to join this ragtag band.
By the way, I still think the scrolls used there, in the image, was something innovative, though.
How could you not see them sneaking in? |
Suddenly, a bomber appeared in their office. The Detectives' office. Their headquarters, supposedly the most protected. Apparently not in the world of Bungou. Or... something may happen.
This man started demanding to meet the boss, while repeating that the Armed Detectives stole his life. Sounds fishy.
That one scene reminded me of Fullmetal Alchemist, though: the arm movement. Apparently it is still customary there to resolve a dispute with rock-paper-scissors.
Kunikida lost, and lost again to the bomber. And as expected of Dazai, he 'convinced' Atsushi to stall the bomber. This one scene, where Atsushi convinced the bomber to the point of wavering by random illogical statements was one of the most laugh-worthy in Bungou so far.
Then this was the moment we all saw in the trailer: Kunikida using his Doppo Poet. Sad to say, beside the amazing flash of dancing light, a wire gun just appeared and he used it to shoot the bomber. That was all the action there, really.
... that's what you get for messing around during work.
As expected, Atsushi grabs the bomb as it counted down. Quite a tense moment when we were left wondering whether he'll use the hostage girl as the shield, however...
Yep, it was Dazai's test after all. He talked to the boss beforehand to decide whether this guy, who has potential, could join the group.
Once more this is the case of a guy who has potential which was brought up by someone trusting him to the group. Really, I hope Bungou doesn't have all cliched characters.
The creepy brother complex sister aside...
What a way to recruit Atsushi! Dazai used the fact that no one else shall accept him if they know that he's a tiger, frightening the boy, drenching him with sweat. After all that, no way he'll reject, right? Not that tense of a scene, but just amusing to see Atsushi's nervous face. That is all.
And thus, with Atsushi recruited, the story proper shall follow next week.
